Community Swop-Shop
— Christmas Edition

We wanted to continue the "Community Brunch" concept, which was initiated to create a welcoming space where individuals can come alone, with family, colleagues, customers, or old friends they haven’t seen in a long time. This time, we have expanded the platform to include a Christmas-themed barter market as part of Ombruksuka in Oslo.

We believe that fostering community in new ways—where people can connect across generations, political views, and backgrounds—is one of the most vital things we can do to better understand each other in today’s world.

This event took place at Byhands’ office on Rathkes gate. The exchange market featured three categories: party outfits perfect for the Christmas table or New Year’s Eve, cozy wool sweaters ideal for snuggling by the fireplace during the holiday season, and cuttings that can be kept for oneself or given as Christmas gifts. Each guest is allowed to bring a maximum of five garments and five cuttings. All clothing must be of good quality, free from damage, and as nice as what you would give to a good friend. Upon arrival, guests exchange their clothes for tokens that can be used to “purchase” other items.

As organizers, it was incredibly heartwarming to see the gratitude of those who visited when they discovered a “trade treasure.” We believe that choosing to scale the event down to an intimate setting and establishing clear guidelines contributed to the overall success. We truly valued the experience and hope to have the chance to repeat it in the future.
